Black History Month Poster Contest

Due Monday February 22, 2017

Theme: Making a Difference, Then and Now. Choose a Black figure from the past or present and illustrate how he or she has made a difference in the world.

Eligibility: The 2017 Poster Contest is open to the following three grade categories:

  • Elementary: K - 5th grade
  • Middle: 6th – 8th grade
  • High school: 9th – 12th grade

*Open to all students in the LA County

Specifications: All posters must be 22”w by 28”h white poster board.

Submission Deadline: No later than February 20, 2017, please turn in entries to Guest Services located near JCPenney (SouthBay Pavilion – 20700 Avalon Blvd., Carson CA 90746). Guest Services is open Monday through Saturday 10am – 8pm and Sunday 11am – 6pm.

EXTENSION: Poster may be turned in at latest, February 22nd, 2017.

Posters may only contain 20% computer generated graphics.

Poster Labeling: All posters must be labeled with the following information on the back:

  • Student name & grade.
  • Student’s school & address.
  • Parent’s/Guardian’s name, phone number and e-mail address.
  • A short paragraph of no more than 7 sentences explaining your poster entry.

Scoring: Posters will be judged on expression of theme (50%); artwork style and content (25%); and creativity (25%). All poster submissions become the property of SouthBay Pavilion, which reserves all rights to reproduce, publish (art & names), display, copy or store artwork for public use.

Prizes: Three winners will be selected from each category. First place winners will receive a $50 gift card; Second place will receive a $25 gift card and 3rd place will receive a $10 gift card.

All winners will be recognized at the 2017 Black History Month event to be held on Saturday, February 25th from 2pm – 4pm.
